Strengthening Hearts and Minds: LCDS Launches SEL Series with Dr. Shekila Melchior
Another win for our LCDS parents! The Counseling Team at Loudoun Country Day School proudly launched this year’s Parent SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) Series with an inspiring and informative session led by Dr. Shekila Melchior. Dr. Melchior, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed School Counselor in Virginia, brings more than a decade of experience supporting children, adolescents, and families in both school and clinical settings. She is widely recognized as a dynamic presenter on emotional health and resilience, and her warmth and expertise set the stage for a powerful kickoff to this year’s series. Parents left with valuable strategies designed to strengthen both family and school connections, reinforcing LCDS’s commitment to nurturing the whole child.
During her presentation, Dr. Melchior guided parents through practical, age-appropriate approaches to supporting their children’s social and emotional development. She highlighted how the needs of a kindergartener differ from those of a middle schooler and provided concrete strategies for fostering resilience at every stage. Parents also gained tools for recognizing when children might be struggling, whether emotionally, socially, or academically, and how to respond with both compassion and effectiveness. This engaging session not only equipped families with skills they can use right away, but also emphasized the importance of partnership between parents, the school, and the counseling team in supporting every child’s growth and well-being.
