Student Information
One important goal of the educational experience at Loudoun Country Day School is to teach our students to become good citizens who demonstrate sincere concern and respect for others. We believe that it is a privilege to attend Loudoun Country Day, and every student should conduct himself or herself in a manner that conveys respect and kindness for other persons and their property.
Nothing is more rewarding for an administration and faculty than to receive positive reports from members of the community who have witnessed our students’ outstanding behavior on a field trip or at a public event. Our students have received considerable praise for their conduct, and we are always proud of them when we hear such comments.
Respect, kindness, and consideration for the feelings of others are fundamental principles at LCDS, valued not only by the administration and faculty but also by the students. Our aim is to help students further their respectful manner and exemplary behavior.
Students are encouraged to become increasingly independent as they grow. With this independence comes greater responsibility and accountability. Establishing mature independence is sometimes slow and difficult. At times adult intervention is required. We expect that parents and teachers will work together in good faith to solve whatever problems may arise.
Parents and students should take comfort in knowing that the administration and faculty employ the word discipline in its original sense: disciplina, meaning teaching or training. We approach all matters involving disciplinary action in a manner that instructs as well as corrects, always preserving the dignity and self-respect of the student. We consider ourselves child advocates, and believe it is our duty to act in accordance with what is best for the child.
Effective discipline begins in the home and is furthered by the school; it is built on a foundation of communication, mutual respect, clearly defined rules and expectations, consistent application, and fairness.

- Respect the learning of others by walking and talking quietly in the halls.
- Respect the boundaries of the school’s property and remain on school grounds at all times, unless accompanied by a teacher or supervising adult.
- Respect school property and the property of others.
- Respect others; do not harass or tease fellow students.
- Respect the standards of proper, appropriate expression at all times.
- Respect your teachers and cooperate with them in their chief purpose: teaching.
- Respect the school’s schedule for beginning the day; be on time, and be fully prepared for all classes.
- Do not chew gum.
- Do not bring the following items to school without special permission from a teacher: glass containers, knives, water guns, skateboards, rollerblades, rollerskates, CD players, Gameboys, or any other items that good reason would suggest is not appropriate for school.
- Respect our uniform code; dress within the guidelines of the LCDS uniform.
- Respect the law and principles of good health: do not bring cigarettes, drugs or alcohol on campus.

Our guiding principles are few, but they are important. We emphasize:
- Respect: for self, others, property, rules, and the law
- Honesty and integrity
- Kindness and consideration
- Adherence to all school rules
[top]
Our objective is to develop our students into respectful, responsible, caring, individuals who contribute to our educational program and our school overall. As such, we are obligated to help them live up to these guidelines.
Students who violate the above principles will face disciplinary consequences that may include any of the following:
- Lunch detention
- Restriction from school activities
- After-school detention
- In-school suspension
- Out-of-school suspension
- Probation
- Headmaster intervention. The Headmaster reserves the right to expel a student for serious infractions or for ongoing difficulties.
Students who receive out-of-school suspension are responsible for getting and completing assignments and academic work missed during the suspension. They will have the opportunity to make up quizzes and tests they have missed. To get assignments, they are to call three classmates before calling their teacher(s). All work is due when the student returns to school.
No further academic penalty is associated with suspension.

Our School Uniform (Lands' End #9000-2943-0) is important to our mission and philosophy. Uniforms create an atmosphere that reminds our students that school is important. They also encourage individual students to see themselves as part of the whole LCDS community and thereby help promote teamwork and sharing. Uniforms promote school spirit and respect.
While students in all grades are expected to adhere to the uniform guidelines, please note that upper school students (6th-8th grade) who wear clothing that is out of compliance with the school uniform, and do not have an explanatory note signed by a parent, will not be admitted to class. Parent(s) of offenders will then be called to bring to school appropriate clothing for their child. In addition, hairstyle and color, as well as jewelry and makeup should be appropriate and should not distract from the learning environment.
Parent(s) of students in grades 1-5 whose uniform is out of compliance will receive a note from the office explaining which article of clothing did not comply with the school uniform policy. This note needs to be signed and returned to the office. On the third infraction, parents will be invited to conference with the lower school director.
All parents are encouraged to join us in supporting the virtues of a school uniform policy and to encourage our students to see its benefit. Please review this document very carefully so that you can ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for school.
Parents are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to write their child’s name on the tag of every item of clothing. Please check the lost and found periodically to find missing items.
The uniform policy is as follows:
Pre-K and Kindergarten Although there is no official dress code for this age group, prekindergarten and kindergarten students are welcome but not required to wear the uniform. We do request that prekindergarten and kindergarten students not wear jeans, sweat pants or t-shirts with logos unless requested by the teacher. In addition, prekindergarten and kindergarten students are required to wear the LCDS field trip t-shirts for school sponsored field trips (available through the PA Store). The preferred footwear is sneakers.

In an effort to avoid disrupting the academic schedule any more than is necessary, we strive to schedule games at the end of the school day for grades six through eight. Therefore, 6th-8th grade students who normally ride the bus home will not do so on many game days during the year.
Parents are encouraged to attend games and to take their children home with them. Bus transportation will be provided for those students who need it following games. Such transportation is centralized and NOT door to door.
[top]
Students in grades four through eight must dress in the athletic uniforms daily for physical education classes. If students need to replace a shirt or pair of shorts, they must pay for the cost of replacement. In addition, all students are required to wear sneakers and white socks for physical education classes. Sports uniforms should be taken home at the end of each week to be cleaned.
We recommend that students wear sweatshirts and sweatpants during the winter months.
Athletic uniforms can be ordered from the PA Store.

Students are issued textbooks at the beginning of the school year, and each book is assigned a number. If the books are not returned or are returned in damaged condition, parents will be billed for the replacement cost. This also applies to books borrowed from the school library.
End of the year report cards will be held until all books are returned or paid for

The Student Council provides students the opportunity to develop leadership qualities. Through the Student Council, students in fourth through eighth grades learn simple parliamentary procedures, plan and carry out social activities, and perform community service projects.
To serve on the Student Council, officers and representatives must be in good academic standing (85 average) and good behavioral standing (no more than three lunch detentions per trimester).
[top]
All students are assigned lockers or cubbies in the hallways in the main building or in the Upper School building. Books and personal belongings should be left in the lockers. Because the building is regularly used by outside groups, students are encouraged to remove items of value from their lockers at the end of the day. Students may, if they wish, put locks on their lockers. A copy of the combination or an extra key to any lock must be left with the office staff.
[top]
The school provides all direct instructional materials such as textbooks, computer software, and consumable workbooks. General supplies for personal use, such as paper, pencils, and notebooks, are the responsibility of the family. All items should be labeled with the student’s name. Our supply list explains what students need by grade level. Students are expected to arrive at school prepared for the first day of classes.
[top]
In cases of emergency or matters of great importance, a member of the office staff will place calls for students.
Students must ask permission to use the photocopier. If the copier is available, students will be permitted to make copies for personal use at ten cents per copy.
