English
The Greek gods visited our class and have returned to Mt. Olympus. Our study of
Mythology will end next week with a test on the gods and goddesses. The final unit of study this year is on The Middle Ages. We will be reading a Newbery Award winner, Crispen, the Cross of Lead, a wonderful story set in the Middle Ages. The students will study vocabulary drawn from the novel in addition to the vocabulary lists from the Vocabulary for Achievement series. The students are improving their spelling and word usage skills. Vocabulary and grammar tests will continue through the end of the year.
Social Studies
This week we will finish our study of Ancient Rome. To kick off our study of the Middle Ages, a brass rubbing workshop will come to LCDS. In addition to the brass rubbings and the work the students will do in the text book, they will work on projects like letter illumination and designing their own coat of arms. They will also complete a short research project on a member of medieval society. We have planned a few excellent field trip experiences that will correlate well with our study of the Middle Ages. In addition to the brass rubbing workshop, the students will participate in a workshop at the Washington National Cathedral and at Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. They will also attend a joust and feast at Medieval Times.
Math
We have finished all our work with decimals this week and have begun our study of geometry. The students will study lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons. They will also find perimeter and area of triangles and quadrilaterals and area and circumference of a circle. Because of the amount of material to review for the final exam, we’ve already begun to do a little review here and there. The students have done nice work reviewing the various kinds of graphs from the beginning of the school year.
Things to Remember
Field trip dates are:
April ……………Washington National Cathedral
May …………… Baltimore Overnight field trip
Our overnight field trip is just around the corner. Thank you for sending in your payment. The room moms will be requesting final payments soon. Because of the fluid nature of student relationships, we’ve decided to wait until May to make room assignments. We request that students and parents avoid asking for room changes due to personal reasons. Let’s try to remember that this is only for one night and they are hardly in the room at all. Most of the activities we’ll be experiencing will be as a whole group. It’s a wonderful trip and an exciting way to end our school year.
Final exams are June 2-4. The last week of May is review week. Review packets will be sent home in mid-May.
That is all I have for now. I hope you are getting through this unpredictable weather we are having. We are finally getting some sunshine! That, with our April showers, means spring flowers are on their way!
