The Third
Grade Times
Ms. Clark and Mrs. Stern
Reading and Language Arts
The first grading period is jam- packed with skills learning to prepare students for greater independence. Here’s an outline of what we will cover during the next month:
Independent Reading:
Students will learn how to choose a book for independent reading. Each student is asked to read for 20 minutes in class and complete a “T.A.G. IT” form. This provides a written record of the genre, title, and the self, world, and text connection of each book they have written.
Reading To Be Informed
We will learn how to use before, during, and after reading strategies to help understand our novel better. We will learn how to use text features to activate background knowledge. We will also be focusing on identifying cause and effect, sequencing, inference, and different types of independent literature circle roles.
Writing
We are currently learning the five components of a friendly letter and parts of speech. The students will begin to learn how to use the writing process to revise and work towards a published piece. Out first published piece was the friendly letter. We are currently writing to our fifth grade friends at LCDS. Our second piece we will publish will be a personal narrative. This will emphasize the use of relevant descriptions, including sensory details, observations, research based information to make their topic or message clear to the reader.
