Mrs. Stern's Third Grade Newsletter

Dear Parents,

March is going to be a very busy month!  Students will be working on their model covered wagon at home, they are due on March 28.  We also have our pioneer day with Dr. Fall on March 26. I will be sending home details about the dress for that event and our trip to the Waterford shortly.

CHARACTER EDUCATION: Responsibility is the virtue we will be talking about this month. Being responsible is something we talk about all the time - responsibility for homework, projects, studying for tests, personal belongings, etc.

LANGUAGE ARTS: We have begun reading Rachel’s Journal: The Story of a Pioneer Girl,  which will coincide with our unit on the Pioneers. Through the book, the children will begin to understand the daily life of a pioneer.

MATHEMATICES: We have started a new unit on Statistics and Probability. The children are collecting data, reading, interpreting and making tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs, line plots, circle graphs, and line graphs. They will also experiment with probability listing outcomes and making predictions. They will solve problems using a graph. The latter part of the month we will begin a unit on measurement and time

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will begin a new unit on Pioneers.  As I already mentioned, Dr. Fall and a special visitor in the library (Barbara Reese) will be presenting “Pioneer Day” on March 26th. The children will visit five stations and learn how the pioneers measured how far they went each day by wheel counting, learn how to pack a wagon, make hoe cakes, experience pioneer school, and learn the landmarks along the Oregon Trail.

PENMANSHIP: We have finished learning all the capital letters in cursive, and will now review the upper and lower case, cursive alphabets.
