Dear Parents,

It’s hard to believe that this is the last full month of fourth grade! Where has the year gone? The last few weeks will be very busy and exciting.

CHARACTER EDUCATION: Independence and self-reliance are the virtues for this month.

LANGUAGE ARTS: We will finish up My Brother Sam is Dead and then the children will make their own choice (from a group of 4-5 books) of a book to read next. They will be working in literature circles and their group will decide how they are going to conduct their literature circle. We will also continue with our writing workshops. The children have finished a personal narrative and are now writing a story. They are also writing a research report for geography. Next they will practice writing to persuade and writing an opinion.

MATHEMATICS: The remainder of the year will be reviewing and practicing decimals, and learning dividing with 2 digit divisors. Toward the end of the month we will study metric measurement and probability.

SCIENCE: The classes are working on an architectural measurement project.

HISTORY: After our wonderful trip to Philadelphia, the classes will study immigration, westward expansion, and the causes of the Civil War. The classes will have a short report to complete on the first Industrial Revolution.

GEOGRAPHY – The children have researched information about 1 of the 50 states, and are creating a newsletter in technology about that state.

I would like to thank all of you who have come in to help throughout the year for parties, Wednesday lunches, and chaperones for field trips. A special “Thank you!” goes to Renee Carter and Trudy Nightingale for the outstanding job they have done this year as Room Parents. We couldn’t have had such a successful year without their enthusiasm, time, and generosity.

I wish you all a safe and happy summer. The best way to help your children be prepared for fifth grade is to have them read every day, and practice their multiplication and division facts through 12.

It has been an honor and a pleasure to have your children in my class this year.

Connie
