Dear Parents,

It hardly seems possible that we are nearly halfway through the first trimester of your child’s sixth grade year. All students are adjusting well to their upper school status and are proving themselves to be capable and motivated. I will be contacting you to schedule  a  conference later this month, and I know that meeting with you will provide me with insights that will enable me to better meet the needs of your child.

As you know, in English we are reading the novel, The Egypt Game.  Within the context of the novel we have been working on important reading skills such as comprehension, character development, summarizing, and vocabulary.  We have also been identifying examples of simile, metaphor and idiomatic expressions. We have been working on parts of speech and sentence structure in grammar.  The students have been writing regularly in their journals.  We completed a unit on map skills in social studies.  We will now review the geographic land forms and will learn about prehistory, oral tradition, history, primary sources and secondary sources. In sixth grade math we have covered bar graphs, line graphs, pie graphs, scatterplots and line plots, as well as a cumulative review. We will have the first chapter test this Friday.

            Here are some important dates:

October 8  no school, Columbus Day

October 12  field trip to Oatlands for an archeological experience

October 15  science field trip to the Natural History Museum

October 19  no school, Parent Conference Day

October 29  science field trip to the Rust Sanctuary

November 6, 7, 8, 12 and 13   ERB testing

Thank you for your compliance with the earlier upper school starting time of 8:15.  We have so much to accomplish that we must begin class right on time. I look forward to meeting with each of you at our conference time, and as always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                Martha Eshleman
