Mrs. DiLoreto’s

I would like to thank each of you for a fabulous teacher appreciation week. I loved all the cards, flowers and special treats. I certainly feel appreciated! Teaching is a special job that I am honored to do. Thank you for all the support and for sharing your children with me throughout the year! This is a special group of students, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to teach them and to work with you, their families.

Language Arts- We will be keeping our same schedule for reading groups, and we will continue spelling tests until the last week in May. Please encourage your child to write neatly in their spelling notebook and to check for correct spelling, especially their spelling words. The children have done a fabulous job writing letters in their Journal Writing.
This month, we will also be reading books from the children’s author Cynthia Rylant. Since National Pet Week is in May, I thought the children would enjoy the stories from the Henry and Mudge and Mr. Putter and Tabby series.
The children have made great progress this year in both decoding words and comprehending stories. Please continue having your child read every night. It will be important for students to continue reading throughout the summer. This consistent practice makes such a difference in building their reading fluency and confidence, and it will help them to be better prepared for 2nd grade.
Math- We have started a unit on geometry and the class is really excited about it. We’ll be spending the rest of the school year reviewing time, fractions, measurement and 2 digit addition and subtraction.
Science- The children have really enjoyed our unit on plants. They have grown wheat and marigold plants from seed and listened to many great stories and displayed their knowledge through projects in class. As a culminating activity for our Plant unit, our class will take a fieldtrip to the Rust Sanctuary in Leesburg.
Social Studies-
We have begun our study of our neighbor to the South, Mexico. The children will be learning about the capital city, flag, language, clothing and traditions as well as visit a Mexican restaurant to sample Mexican food. We will finish up the year in Social Studies by reviewing map skills and the names of the continents and oceans.
Thank you also to all the parents that have come in for Wednesday lunch. We appreciate all that you do!
