¡HOLA! ¿Cómo estás? Espero que muy bien. We have had a very good start to our year in Spanish and will be doing many exciting things throughout the fall!
In 8TH GRADE currently, we are beginning our sports unit, starting with "el fútbol" and doing parts of the body--which ones to use and not use in "fútbol", and we will learn about vocabulary on "el béisbol" , "el baloncesto/básquetbol" and other sports. Grammatically, we will be learning "stem-changing" verbs in the present tense, along with the verbs "gustar" {to like}, "encantar" {to love a thing}, "aburrir" {to bore} and "interesar" {to be interesting}. At the end of the unit, students will be doing a project using sports vocabulary. They'll have the opportunity to select either to do sports interviews, sports broadcast [kind of like ESPN Deportes of LCDS] and sports columns.
The overall goal for this year is not only to have students learn a lot of new vocabulary and verbs, but more importantly get them to communicate much more in the target language as they prepare themselves for Spanish 2 at the high school level. Included in this will be students learning the past tenses in Spanish and being able to describe things they themselves have done and events completed in the past. If all goes as planned, I will be teaching the students some level 2 material towards the middle to late 3rd trimester.
In 7TH GRADE, students are currently learning descriptive adjectives and being able to talk about themselves and different people. They will be learning the nuisances on asking questions, as well as doing readings on these subjects.
The goal this year is to get students to communicate in the target language more and have them to be able to talk about other things and people in general by the end of the year. This will prepare for students for 8th grade Spanish very well.
The 6TH GRADE is doing the concepts of time, months, dates, days of the week, numbers and basic weather expressions prior to our "opening" unit, in which the students will be able to tell about themselves and others using descriptive adjectives and associated verbs. engaged currently in the beginning stages of their Spanish learning. I am getting to know each person more and more in the class and finding out a little more about them, assessing each person's interest.
The goal is to have each student by the end of the year to be able to talk about themselves and other things in a very general manner. 7th and 8th grades will hone in more on the details of conversations.
The Europe trip is going to occur during Spring Break of 2009, rather than this upcoming spring. I encourage you, if you have not done so already, to participate in Mrs. Kitselman's end-of-the-year trip to Costa Rica. We will be having trips on an alternate year basis, hers being on the even years [2008, 2010, etc.] and the Foreign Language Department's on the odd years [2009, 2011, etc.]
I am very happy to be teaching your children Spanish this year. If you have any questions at any time, please e-mail me at any time! The addresses are listed below! I check them often, so you will get a response very quickly.
In addition, you will notice that I have an "official" class web page, which is linked below as 'my Spanish web page'. On there you will find homework assignments, extra credit and other important items. I will be using it with the students often.
