Valentine’s Day
A list of the students in our class will be at the end of the newsletter. We will pass out the valentines during our class party.
Language Arts
In spelling, we will continue to study long vowel patterns, as well as high frequency words. The students have begun to use a “Spelling Notebook”, to complete spelling assignments.
In January, we began our study of “Cinderella Around the World.”
We have read versions from France, Korea, Germany, Africa, Mexico, Ireland (Cinderlad!) and the Algonquin, The Rough Faced Girl. This unit is a wonderful opportunity to learn about different cultures, as well as build comprehensions skills through story and character comparison.
In February we will read various Fairy Tales such as The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Math
Our field trip to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. will be a great learning opportunity for the children. The trip to the gift shop is a terrific hands-on experience for the children to practice their money skills.
We will finish our study of Data and Graphs. Then we will start a unit on Place Value. In this unit the children will:
· Read and write numbers through 100
· Compare and order numbers
· Recognize odd and even numbers and skip count by 5s and 2s
· Solve problems using logical reasoning
A great web site for math facts practice sheets is www.superkids.com.
Social Studies
The Flat Stanleys are on their way to their various destinations. We’ll await their arrival back to LCDS and then display them outside our classroom.
In February, we will continue our unit of important symbols of the United States, as well as important historical figures. We will then move on to study our neighbor to the north, Canada. The children will be learning the capital city, flag, language, clothing and traditions of this neighboring country.
Science
We will be exploring various solids and liquids and describing their properties in class. In addition, the children will play a sorting game and building towers using their knowledge of the properties of solids.
Valentines
Below is a list of the names of the children in our class. If your child would like to share valentines at our class party, please make sure that there is one for every child in the class. Please have your child write their classmate’s name and their own name on the valentines. This is good practice for them. Please remind your child that neatness is important when giving something to others.
