Athletics

Strong minds. Healthy bodies.

Athletics is an integral part of the whole-child approach at LCDS, and our exceptional physical education and athletic programs emphasize skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and the importance of exercise in leading a healthy, productive life.

All students participate in age-appropriate P.E. and sports. Our talented, enthusiastic coaches and physical education faculty are well-equipped to work with and motivate children of all ages. Eager to cheer on their former classmates, alumni often return to campus for beloved traditions including the Blue and Green Games, the Mile Run and the Talon Tournament.

Physical Education

Beginning in prekindergarten, all students participate in physical education:

  • Prekindergarten through Third Grade: Classes meet three times per week for 30 minutes. (Second and third grade have a fourth period on Friday afternoons where they have a choice of swim team or P.E. for 45 minutes.)
  • Fourth and Fifth Grade: Classes meet three times per week for 45 minutes.
  • Sixth through Eighth Grade: Classes meet three times per week for 80 minutes.

Athletics Teams

We introduce interscholastic team sports in fourth and fifth grade, when our soccer, field hockey, basketball and lacrosse units culminate in “play days” with other private schools. Our students play on teams with students from the other schools and all enjoy the camaraderie of team sports.

Beginning in sixth grade, all Middle School students join at least one of our 17 interscholastic athletics teams, including up to three different skill levels of boys’ soccer, girls’ field hockey, coed tennis, coed cross country, boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ lacrosse. Our no-cut policy means that every student plays on a team. In the winter, Middle School students can opt to participate in Recreational Sports and Fitness, which offers a variety of sports and games including gymnastics, fencing, flag football, introductory life saving, rock climbing and volleyball.

Extracurricular Sports

We offer extracurricular sports opportunities through the LCDS Eagle Swim Team, Little Dribblers Basketball, Girls on the Run and a variety of sports-related after-school activities and camps.

“The athletics program provides opportunities to develop leadership, to promote character development, to have all children feel a part of the school community, and very importantly in this day and age, to be part of something bigger than themselves.”
